Derek Hines ’99 Memorial Hockey Game – January 3, 2009, 12:00 noon at Ristuccia Arena

The first annual Derek Hines ’99 Memorial Hockey Game will take place this Saturday, January 3, when St. John’s Prep plays Woburn High School at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington, Mass. The game begins at noon. The Massachusetts State Police Bagpipe Band will appear during the game and there will be a raffle. All proceeds of the game will benefit the Derek Hines Foundation. Tickets will be available at the door and are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Children under 12 admitted free.

A 1999 graduate of St. John’s Prep and a 2003 graduate of West Point, 1st Lt. Hines served as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan and was killed while on patrol with his unit on September 1, 2005. At St. John’s, Hines played on the varsity hockey team for four years before going on to become a four-year letter winner for the Black Knights, serving as co-captain of the team his senior year. He earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star before his death, and in 2007, the Hockey Commissioners’ established the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award in his honor.
